Today we cover the use of detail and imagery in your PRE. To put it simply, detail and imagery combine to make writing worth reading. As you can see in the essay, "My Dog's Death," the absence of detail and imagery makes writing hard to read and, worst of all, boring. Read through the Powerpoint for some hints about what I'm looking for in your paper. Also, refer back to "Fish Cheeks," and pay attention to the descriptions of the food and of Tan's relatives at the table. There are also examples I've posted up on the website, under the Personal Reflection Essay prompt.
Below, on the left, is a short Ted talk we will watch tomorrow, from Tan Le. If you miss class, then annotate the video for detail and imagery. What images and details does she choose to include? Why are they effective? Notice where she inserts reflection, and what seems to be the point of the reflection? |
