During week 3, students will breakdown their essays into the component parts of narrative, reflection, and imagery.
Students will understand that imagery, narrative, and reflection should all serve the same purpose in writing -- explaining, or showcasing, the significant truth. The difference is in how each element does this.
Imagery enhances a reader's understanding of the important moments, as the author uses diction and sensory detail to show the reader the corporeal significance of a smile, a laugh, a hug, or even the way the sun shines off the water for a moment. The narrative is where the story unfolds, and where the author chooses what moments to focus upon (the moments when imagery and detail make a person, idea, or event stand out on the page). The reflection is where the author comments on the significance of the previous details and events, and explains why and how those events have shaped their perspective for the better.
And the operative word there is better. Reflection enhances and deepens our relationship with the world around us. For this essay, I do not allow students to end their essay on a sour, negative note. Even the worst situations offer some hope, some lesson to help show us the way. Ultimately, that is the lesson of this paper.
