In theory and in explanation, the PRE is simple. You have to write about an important event in your life, and your response has to include narrative and reflection. Beyond these necessities, all you have to worry about is structure and editing.
However, this assignment poses a bigger, more substantial challenge to all of you. This, if you haven't started already, is the time that you should begin to make meaning of your life. The premise behind the famous quote "I think therefore I am" is that the mere act of thinking begets existence. But, as we've all, I hope, realized, there are many levels of thought in this world. This assignment calls for more than a passing reflection upon an important event. I don't want generalities or cliches about a mother's love being the best thing in the world. Not that this is untrue. But as this realization is universal, so too is it obvious. So what I want from you is to dig down and try to explain why this love, or gesture, or accident, or whatever you write about, is so important. You will do this not by giving me some general abstraction. You will show me how this event has changed you, saved you, inspired you...we have work to do, so come to class prepared to write and, above all, think. |
