We will begin our discussion and analysis of Tim O'Brien's novel The Things They Carried. On Friday, students were handed out an annotation guide for the first chapter, which should serve as a good model for what to do in the remaining chapters: identify characters and the specific things they carry. Now, the trick here will be to label both the tangible, or physical things, as well as the intangible, or non-physical things, that they character bears--such as love, guilt, hatred, or honor.
The Expository Paper will focus on Chapter 1 and the work will be completed in class. The assignment is meant as both a data gathering tool for the English 11 team, as well preparation for the final test, where students will be given an essay along with their multiple choice test.
Remember, there are a lot of characters, so keep track of their names, and the burdens they bear.
Mr. Laughlin
